Any person who operates a motor vehicle, motor-driven cycle or moped on the public streets and highways in Colorado is required to be at least 16 years of age and have a valid driver's license.

Residents : When you become a Colorado resident or take a job and you want to drive in Colorado, you must apply for a Colorado driver license within 10 days.

Non-residents : If you are a visitor over 18 years old and hold a valid driver license from your home state or country, you may drive in Colorado without getting a driver license as long as your home state license remains valid.

You must be at least 18 years old to apply for learners permit. , you must clear a vision test, pass a traffic laws and road signs test, and pay the required fee to receive your learners permit.  You have to show that you understand the meaning of Colorado traffic signs.  You will also have to show that you understand traffic instructions in English. To get your Drivers License, you need demonstrate satisfactory operation of a motor vehicle and clear any physical or mental examination the DMV may find necessary to gauge your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.

Holders of out-of-state licenses are normally waived from taking a driving test if they are 16 years of age or older and as long as they clear the vision and knowledge test on traffic laws and road signs.  However, driving tests are required for any out-of-country license holders.

Minors: If you are under 18, an Affidavit of Liability must be signed by a parent or guardian before you can apply for a permit.

1. Birth Certificate issued by state or federal authority
2. US Passport/ Resident Alien Card / Valid Foreign Passport with a valid United States Immigration Document
3. Social Security Card
4. Proof of residence address, such as a bank statement, utility bill, or pay stub.
5. Payment for application fee
6. Applicants transferring an Out of State driver license must present their Out of State driver license, Social Security card (or one of the other acceptable documents for social security number) AND one other form from the “Primary Listing”.

After getting your permit, when you start learning driving, you must be accompanied by someone of at least 18 years of age, with a valid license, and have at least one year of driving experience for the same type or class of vehicle you are driving.   A certified driving instructor may also accompany you.  The person must be seated in the car on the passenger seat next to you.
