All drivers must sign a driver license application and answer the appropriate questions on that form. Those applicants who are licensed in another state must surrender their license from the other state. If eligible for a Social Security Number it must be provided.

Holders of out-of-state licenses are normally waived from taking a driving test if they are 16 years of age or older and as long as they clear the vision and knowledge test on traffic laws and road signs.  However, driving tests are required for any out-of-country license holders.

Teens: If you are under 18 and are not married, your license application must be signed by one parent or legal guardian.
 

Prepare for written exam

Florida DMV requires all applicants to pass a knowledge test with questions on Florida traffic laws, road signs, and rules of safe driving.  Even if you have prior driving experience, you will find it difficult to pass this written exam without thoroughly studying Florida traffic laws and road signs.

Documents needed for establishing identity:

Establishing proper identity is very important part of getting your learners permit. Please have the following documents ready. For further information, please visit Florida DMV official website.
  1. Birth Certificate issued by state or federal authority
  2. US Passport/ Resident Alien Card / Valid Foreign Passport with a valid United States Immigration Document
  3. Social Security Card
  4. Proof of residence address, such as a bank statement, utility bill, or pay stub.
  5. Payment for application fee
  6. Applicants transferring an Out of State driver license must present their Out of State driver license, Social Security card (or one of the other acceptable documents for social security number) AND one other form from the “Primary Listing”.
  7. Also need Proof of Driver Training if you are 16 or 17 years old.

Driving practice:

After getting your permit, when you start learning driving, you must be accompanied by someone of at least 21 years of age, with a valid license, and have at least one year of driving experience for the same type or class of vehicle you are driving.   A certified driving instructor may also accompany you.  The person must be seated in the car on the passenger seat next to you.  Drivers can only drive during daylight hours the first three months from the original issue date of the learners permit.  After 3 months, they can drive from 6 am till 10 pm.
