Anyone operating a motor vehicle on public roadways in Georgia is required to have a drivers license.  Within 30 days after becoming a Georgia resident, you are required to obtain a Georgia driver license.

You must be at least 16 years old to apply for learners permit. You must clear a vision test, pass a traffic laws and road signs test, and pay the required fee to receive your learners permit. The minimum acceptable vision for non-commercial license is 20/60 in one eye, with or without corrective lenses.

To get your Drivers License, you need demonstrate satisfactory operation of a motor vehicle and clear any physical or mental examination the DMV may find necessary to gauge your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.

Teens: Applicants under the age of 18 years need to present proof of the following :

• Completion of Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP)
• Satisfaction of school attendance and conduct requirements
• Proof of completion of a DDS-approved driver education program
• Evidence of at least forty (40) hours of supervised driving, including 6 hours of night driving.

1. Birth Certificate issued by state or federal authority
2. US Passport/ Resident Alien Card / Valid Foreign Passport with a valid United States Immigration Document
3. Social Security Card
4. Proof of residence address, such as a bank statement, utility bill, or pay stub.
5. Payment for application fee
6. Applicants transferring an Out of State driver license must present their Out of State driver license, Social Security card (or one of the other acceptable documents for social security number) AND one other form from the “Primary Listing”.
7. Also need Proof of Driver Training if you are 16 or 17 years old.

After getting your permit, when you start learning driving, you must be accompanied by someone of at least 21 years of age, with a valid license, and have at least one year of driving experience for the same type or class of vehicle you are driving.   A certified driving instructor may also accompany you.
