Who needs a license?

How you get your license

You must be at least 15 years old to apply for learners permit.  If you are under the age of 17 you must first
successfully complete an approved driver’s training program.  Then, you must also complete a Supervised Instruction Period (SIP) under Idaho’s graduated license program. 

  You must clear a vision test, pass a traffic laws and road signs test, and pay the required fee to receive your learners permit. You have to show that you understand and recognize of traffic control devices.

An approved Idaho driver-training program consists of a required Driver training is required for anyone under 17 years old who is applying for an Idaho driver’s license.

Teens: Applicants under the age of 17 years is required to have the following:

  • 30 hours of classroom instruction,
  • 6 hours of in-car observation in a driver-training car
  • 6 hours of behind the wheel driving with a driver training instructor.
If under 17 years old, you will have to complete Graduate Drivers License program and after 6 months of violation free supervised instruction, you will get your license.
 

Prepare for written exam

Idaho DMV requires all applicants to pass a knowledge test with questions on Idaho traffic laws, road signs, and rules of safe driving.  Even if you have prior driving experience, you will find it difficult to pass this written exam without thoroughly studying Idaho traffic laws and road signs.

Documents needed for establishing identity:

Establishing proper identity is very important part of getting your learners permit.  Please have the following documents ready.  For further information, please visit Idaho DMV official website.

  1. Birth Certificate issued by state or federal authority
  2. US Passport/ Resident Alien Card / Valid Foreign Passport with a valid United States Immigration Document
  3. Social Security Card
  4. Proof of residence address, such as a bank statement, utility bill, or pay stub.
  5. Payment for application fee
  6. Applicants transferring an Out of State driver license must present their Out of State driver license, Social Security card (or one of the other acceptable documents for social security number) AND one other form from the “Primary Listing”.
  7. lso need Proof of Driver Training if you are 16 or 17 years old.
 

Driving practice:

After getting your permit, when you start learning driving, you must be accompanied by someone of at least 21 years of age, with a valid license, and have at least one year of driving experience for the same type or class of vehicle you are driving.   A certified driving instructor may also accompany you.  If under 16 years old, you will be restricted to driving during daylight hours only unless accompanied by a licensed driver of at least 21 years.
