Anyone operating a motor vehicle on public roadways in Indiana is required to have a drivers license.  Within 90 days after becoming a Indiana resident, you are required to obtain a Indiana driver license.

You must be at least 15 years old to get a drivers education learners permit.  You must be at least 16 years and 30 days old and have held learners permit for at least 60 days to apply for operator permit.    

  You must clear a vision test, pass a traffic laws and road signs test, and pay the required fee to receive your learners permit. You have to show that you understand and recognize of traffic control devices.

To get your Drivers License, you need demonstrate satisfactory operation of a motor vehicle and clear any physical or mental examination the BMV may find necessary to gauge your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.

An approved Indiana driver-training program consists of a required Driver training is required for anyone under 17 years old who is applying for an Indiana driver’s license.

1. Birth Certificate issued by state or federal authority
2. US Passport/ Resident Alien Card / Valid Foreign Passport with a valid United States Immigration Document
3. Social Security Card
4. Proof of residence address, such as a bank statement, utility bill, or pay stub.
5. Payment for application fee
6. Applicants transferring an Out of State driver license must present their Out of State driver license, Social Security card (or one of the other acceptable documents for social security number) AND one other form from the “Primary Listing”.
7. Also need Proof of Driver Training if you are 16 or 17 years old.

After getting your permit, when you start learning driving, you must be accompanied by someone of at least 21 years of age, with a valid license, and have at least one year of driving experience for the same type or class of vehicle you are driving. A driver education learner’s permit does not legally allow you to drive alone under any circumstances.
