How you get your license

You must be at least 16 years old to get a learners permit.   You have to be at least 18 years old for your drivers license.  You must clear a vision test, pass a traffic laws and road signs test, and pay the required fee to receive your learners permit. You have to show that you understand and recognize of traffic control devices.  must have 180-day instruction period after receiving permit.  After that you can get your drivers license.

To get your Drivers License, you need demonstrate satisfactory operation of a motor vehicle and clear any physical or mental examination the MVD may find necessary to gauge your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.

Expired License:  Kentucky law requires you to pass an eyesight exam and a written exam of your ability to read and understand highway signs and of your knowledge of Kentucky traffic laws before your license can be renewed.

 

Teens: If less than 16 years of age, applicant must get the application signed by parent/guardian.  If you are under the age of 18 may not drive between the hours of midnight and 6:00 a.m.  Parent/Guardian must certify 60 hours practice driving, out of which 10 hours must be at night.   All drivers under the age of 21 are subject to “Zero Alcohol Tolerance.”

 

Prepare for written exam

Kentucky DMV requires all applicants to pass a knowledge test with questions on Kentucky traffic laws, road signs, and rules of safe driving.  Even if you have prior driving experience, you will find it difficult to pass this written exam without thoroughly studying Kentucky traffic laws and road signs.

Documents needed for establishing identity:

Establishing proper identity is very important part of getting your learners permit.  Please have the following documents ready.  For further information, please visit Kentucky DMV official website.
  1. Birth Certificate issued by state or federal authority
  2. US Passport/ Resident Alien Card / Valid Foreign Passport with a valid United States Immigration Document
  3. Social Security Card
  4. Proof of residence address, such as a bank statement, utility bill, or pay stub.
  5. Payment for application fee
  6. Applicants transferring an Out of State driver license must present their Out of State driver license, Social Security card (or one of the other acceptable documents for social security number) AND one other form from the “Primary Listing”.
  7. Also need Proof of Driver Training if you are 16 or 17 years old.
 

Driving practice:

After getting your permit, when you start learning driving, you must be accompanied by someone of at least 21 years of age, with a valid license, and have at least one year of driving experience for the same type or class of vehicle you are driving.
