Getting the learners permit is both fun and tough at the same time.   Please read through the sections below to understand the rules, identification requirements and the overall process for getting your permit.

Anyone operating a motor vehicle on public roadways in Maine is required to have a driver’s license.  You are required to carry your license with you when driving.  New residents have to surrender the old license and obtain a Maine license within 30 days of moving to the state.

You must be at least 15 years old to get a learners permit.   If you are between 15 and 18 years of age, you must complete an approved driver education course.  You must clear a vision test, pass a traffic laws and road signs test, and pay the required fee to receive your learners permit. You have to show that you understand and recognize of traffic control devices.

To get your Drivers License, you need demonstrate satisfactory operation of a motor vehicle and clear any physical or mental examination the DMV may find necessary to gauge your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.

Establishing proper identity is very important part of getting your learners permit.  Please have the following documents ready.  For further information, please visit Maine DMV official website.

1. Birth Certificate issued by state or federal authority.
2. US Passport/ Resident Alien Card / Valid Foreign Passport with a valid United States Immigration Document.
3. Social Security Card
4. Proof of residence address, such as a bank statement, utility bill, or pay stub.
5. Payment for application fee.
6. Applicants transferring an Out of State driver license must present their Out of State driver license, Social Security card (or one of the other acceptable documents for social security number) AND one other form from the “Primary Listing”.
7. Also need Proof of Driver Training if you are 16 or 17 years old.

After getting your permit, when you start learning driving, you must be accompanied by someone of at least 20 years of age, with a valid license, and have at least 2 years of driving experience for the same type or class of vehicle you are driving.   If a sibling is accompanying you as a licensed driver, then he/she must be of at least 18 years old.
